Over a thousand years ago, the Yuman-speaking people inhabited the area now known as modern-day Coronado. Most likely, the La Jolla Native Americans along with other tribes were assimilated into one group, namely the Kumeyaay. In the mid-16th century, Portuguese Juan Rodriguez under the authority of the Spanish Empire landed his ship at the Gulf of California where he discovered present-day Point Loma in San Diego. It was then claimed by the Viceroy of New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza. In 1769, in order to stem encroachment from the British and Russians, the Spanish Crown ordered a settlement to be established at Alta California, an area that had been claimed by the Spanish around two centuries before. The Coronado peninsula was given to Pedro C. Carrillo and his bride Josefa for their wedding by Mexican Governor Pio Pico in 1846, and then exchanged hands several more times before the United States government acquired it sometime after the Mexican-American War. In 1886, the Coronado Beach Company was established with the purpose of turning the area into a resort town. Jacob Gruendike, Hampton L. Story, and Elisha Spurr Babcock purchased the land and built the Hotel del Coronado, which put it on the map as a popular tourist destination.
