Originally named "Paguay,” the valley forth which the city of Poway is situated has a long history dating as far back as 7000 BCE with the Kumeyaay (also known as the Diegueño) inhabiting the area. The modern-day history of Poway began sometime during the late 18th century when the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá raised cattle in the valley. The mission was founded by Spanish friar and Roman Catholic Spanish priest Junípero Serra. The mission was named for the Catholic Spaniard Didacus of Alcalá, who was also known as San Diego. Many historians have debated the meaning of “Paguay,” but it’s thought to have meant "end of the valley” or "the meeting of little valleys." Though few records have survived from the time when American settlers began to arrive in the area, it’s understood that they came to the area during the late antebellum period for farming purposes. In 1994, the Poway Progress began and the town’s history began to be recorded, showing that there was little growth for quite some time even though the farmers prospered. The lack of growth stemmed from the fact that, even though the community had a creek and fertile soil, there wasn’t enough water to support large-scale farming operations. Throughout the 1900s, only the most resourceful of the settlers could cope with the droughts and lack of transportation. In the 1950s, Poway began to witness substantial growth as the first subdivision was built followed by the creation of Lake Poway.
