Rancho Santa Fe can be roughly translated to “Holy Faith Ranch.” A member of the San Diego, California, metropolitan area, this master-planned community is a census-designated place (CDP) located at the far western edge of San Diego North County. It was originally named Rancho San Dieguito as part of an 1841 8,824-acre Mexican land grant. In 1906, the Santa Fe Railway bought the land grant in order to establish a Blue Gum eucalyptus plantation with the purpose of producing its own railroad ties. Nevertheless, the wood produced from these trees was not sufficient for the job, and so the railroad decided to establish the Santa Fe Land Improvement Company with the idea of developing the land into a housing community. Out of the original 8,824 acres from the Rancho San Dieguito land grant, 6,200 acres were renamed “ Rancho Santa Fe" in 1922. Lilian Jeannette Rice, an eco-conscious architect who was well-known for her Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture in California was charged with designing and supervising the construction of the village center and a few residences. Today, this community is known for its luxurious homes, pristine golf course, and fields of beautiful Eucalyptus trees.
